What does it take to be a successful trader?

Guest article from Ross Maxwell, Founder of Key Zone Traders.

When traders start their trading journey, many will jump from one approach to another, searching for an elusive, foolproof strategy that can guarantee profits. This is the reason why the majority of traders fail, as they are not focusing their energy and efforts on developing the necessary skills for long-term success.

It is true; you need a good strategy. You need a clearly defined set of rules and a detailed trade plan. This is the blueprint you will follow every time you start a trading session. What is vital is that this meticulous trade plan has an edge.

This is because trading is all about probabilities. Some trades will win, and some will lose; the distribution of winners vs losers will be random. If you stick to the plan and your plan has an edge, you will return a profit, but only if all other things are equal.

This means you need to create consistency in all aspects of your trading, including executing your trade plan. You need to risk the same amount on every trade and leverage at a responsible amount to withstand the inevitable drawdown periods.

You must develop the emotional intelligence and discipline to continue to execute your trade plan consistently, even when your emotions attempt to hijack your decision-making process. This is human nature and why cultivating the right mindset is absolutely essential when learning to be a successful trader.

You can have the greatest strategy in the market, but if you do not have the mindset and capacity to execute the plan with the correct, responsible risk parameters, you will not make money in the long term.

If you allow your emotions to overrule your trading plan, this can also affect the execution of your risk management strategies and lead to a variety of issues that stunt the growth of many aspiring traders, including overtrading, revenge trading, FOMO, hesitation, amongst many others. This can lead to erratic trading behaviour and large drawdowns on your account. In many cases, it can also lead to a blown account, sometimes several times over.

If you blow your account with no means to refund it, you cease becoming a trader and lose all the opportunities that come with it.

This potential risk is why sensible and consistent leveraging is vital for creating success as a trader. Without the skills to manage your exposure, you will also be unable to profit in the markets over a sustained period. However, again, many traders do not have the right mindset to implement their risk controls consistently.

Creating trading success is just like building a house. You need the foundations of solid risk management strategies and the correct mindset; otherwise, the house will collapse. The plan is just the roof that keeps you warm and prevents you from getting wet when it rains, but it is still an essential part of the structure.

Trading also requires time, dedication, and patience to obtain the necessary skills to succeed and create the mindset required. It is a profession, and when you enter the marketplace, you are participating in a market full of other professionals who have spent years developing their skills. Therefore, we need to approach trading seriously and ensure we acquire the necessary skills to thrive in a safe environment and with a responsible approach before we commit our hard-earned cash to the markets.
